Network Maintenance – INEX

Blacknight are members of five European Internet Exchanges, including INEX in Dublin. INEX carries a significant percentage of traffic between ISPs in Ireland. Due to the continued increase of peering, INEX needs to increase the number of IPv4 addresses available on the primary peering LAN. To accomplish this, all peering members will be required to renumber their IPv4 address to a new range.

INEX have a maintenance window scheduled from 2016-11-10 09:00 UTC to 2016-11-14 23:59 UTC. More details are available here:

https://www.inex.ie/technical/renumbering

Blacknight underwent a similar renumbering with AMS-IX last year, which went without issue. During that process, we found the majority of ISPs renumbered within the first 24 hours.

For this change, we will run both IPv4 addresses concurrently to reduce the impact. As BGP sessions are brought up with the new IPv4 address, we will remove the old sessions.

Maintenance Windows

We are scheduling two maintenance windows to implement this change. During the first maintenance window we will add the new configuration:

Date: 2016-11-07 23:00 – 2016-11-07 23:59 UTC
Data Centre: Equinix DB2
Impact: Increased latency for approximately one minute.

The second maintenance window will run concurrently with the INEX maintenance window. During this time we will remove the legacy configuration as required:

Date: 2016-11-10 09:00 – 2016-11-14 23:59 UTC
Data Centre: Equinix DB2
Impact: Blacknight are connected to both INEX LAN1 and LAN2, which will limit the impact of this change. However, customers may see brief increases in latency to individual ISPs as they reconfigure their peering routers.
